20 Cheap Date Ideas

Dating, whether it’s a first date or a 500th date, can leave a hole in your pocket if you’re not careful. Skip the fancy dinners and try one of these options instead. Your budget will thank you!

  1. Go to happy hour. Even join some friends for a double-date. Stick to the specials to save even more money.
  2. Have a picnic in the park. Pack up some simple sandwiches or snacks and a blanket (and maybe some bug spray!)
  3. Take a stroll on the beach. Okay, I know not everyone is as lucky as I am to live on the beach. But seriously…long walks on the beach…*swoon.*
  4. Attend a play dress rehearsal. You can often ask to watch at no cost, versus paying for pricey tickets for a show. Or if you’re adventurous, just sneak in.
  5. Have a movie night. So simple and old school, but so much fun. Forts are optional.
  6. Compete to see who cooks the best food. I would never win, but it’s fun either way.
  7. Go to work parties together. I get to go to a lot of grand openings and parties for work. If others are bringing a date, bring yours!
  8. Have a game night together. The more competitive, the better.
  9. Go for a hike. What better (and healthier) way to enjoy some time together and get back to nature?
  10. Tour breweries. Limit yourself to a few beers and you have a fairly cheap day of trying local brews together.
  11. Go to the dog park. If you’re a dog owner, this can be something fun to do together while letting your dog burn off some energy.
  12. Attend a matinee movie. If you’re a movie-goer, try going during the day. SO much cheaper.
  13. Find Groupons for popular restaurants in town. No need to deprive yourself of fancy restaurants. Just buy a Groupon ahead of time to try to score some deals!
  14. Take a walk downtown. Even though I live in the most beautiful city in America, I don’t find myself taking full advantage. A stroll in downtown Charleston to window shop and people watch is still one of my favorite things to do with my boyfriend.
  15. Check your local paper for free events. We find a ton of festivals and events going on in our community. It is a great way to adjust to a new area as well!
  16. Explore a close-by town. Go some place you’ve never been before and take an adventure together.
  17. Teach each other new skills and hobbies. Does he like to golf? Why not join him at the driving range?
  18. Go somewhere fancy for a glass of wine. Order the second cheapest wine on the list (to show that you’re a little classier than you are cheap! Ha!)
  19. Invite friends over for dinner. If everyone brings something to eat or drink, you have a fun and affordable party.
  20. Go window shopping. Okay, you might have to convince your s/o that this is, in fact, a date 🙂
